Producing energy from Fossil Fuels and Coal leaves us in a very bad place. It is harmful to the environment and could pose a serious threat to the very existence of our earth. But producing energy from sources like Biomass does not affect us in anyway. Yet, only less than 1% of the total energy produced in the world comes from Biomass. This is mainly due to two serious misunderstanding that you have towards Biomass energy.
The common myth about biomass
Firstly, people and some so called experts consider that burning woods for biomass released carbon into the environment. It is true that Carbon is harmful for us but it doesn't have anything to do with Biomass. Firstly, it has been verified and proved by many Scientific Organizations that burning wood for biomass will not have any impact on increasing the amount of carbon in the environment.
This is because the carbon emitted from burning wood comes from the above atmosphere and only the carbon which comes from underground (in case of Fossil Fuels) will have an impact towards polluting the environment.
Process of production of Biomass
Normally, Biomass energy is produced by burning forest residues and wood waste inside a furnace. Inside the furnace, heat is produced due to this burning and this heat can be used for the conversion of electricity. Forest Residue is a perfect source of Biomass fuel because it contains carbon absorbed only from the atmosphere.
This carbon is stored in the banks, branches and leaves of the trees. Thus, when this forest residue is burned, it will not raise the level of harmful carbon in the atmosphere as it does not contain any such carbon matter. It does give rise to a harmful Methane gas but the gas gets oxidized during the course of the process. So, Burning Forest residue for Biomass does not do any kind harm for the planet.
Biomass Energy and Forest Residues

Added advantages in using Biomass
You are already saving the environment by substituting Biomass for Fossil Fuels but you can also help to save the environment in other ways if you go for this method. The methane, a harmful gas produced during the burning of fossil fuels will get oxidized only if the process is done inside a furnace.
So, if you don't use forest residue for this purpose and they get burned during some forest fire, it will increase the Methane content in the atmosphere which is very harmful for us. So, you can save the environment in more than one ways if you go for Biomass.
Making biomass production cost-efficient
It is true that harvesting, transporting, cutting and processing the forest residue for the biomass production is a hectic as well as a time consuming job. But you can see a positive in that as well. Mostly, the people located in rural areas of many countries are unemployed.
So, if you setup a biomass production center in those areas, you could offer those people a job as well as reducing the time consumption for production of Biomass. There is so much of Forest based residue in the earth and using them to create eco-friendly energy is something that you have to welcome.
