Energy Efficiency in Air Cooled Chillers





Air cooled chillers are operated by use of changing the condition of refrigerant gas. This is then pushed through orifice and at high pressure it is changed from the state of liquid to gas and as such, heat is absorbed in a chill evaporator through the heat exchange. Once this process is completed, the cold gas, which is already expanded then travels to chill refrigeration and from here, it is then compressed into hot and dense gas, which is then pumped through the chill condenser.

There are certain factors that determine the amount of heat removed and these include the compressors volume and the amount of refrigeration gas that is used. In essence, the air cooled chillers can be defined as a form of chiller used to separate heat from sources such as water or other cool refrigerant and this is done through a system that uses refrigeration and ensures that heat is dissipated through the air.

How the Energy Efficiency is achieved?

For starters, it is important to note that the heart of this process is the refrigeration compressor, which can be defined as a pump that relies on electric energy to ensure that the system works properly. What is more, it is ideal to note that in any system, different compressor technologies might have to be used depending on the type of pump technology being used.

The efficiency is issued by the Coefficient of Performance also known as COP, which refers to the KW that is required at any given time. It is for these reasons that it can be safely concluded that the manner in which energy saving occurs is through the COP features incorporated in the air cooled chillers and as such, it can be broken down as follows.

  • The air cooled chillers ensure that the temperatures are kept at a constant. In this case, it is important to state that the low chill temperatures are known to use more KW causing the COP to worsen while a higher one is known to use less power per KW leading to a higher COP.
  • When there is a high chiller temperature, the COP will be worse compared to when there is a low temperature for the condensing chill. This also occurs whenever the chill temperatures are held at a constant.

Note that the efficiency is delivered when the ratio is between the KW of heat that taken out and that electrical KW input is delivered by the COP. For this reason, it is important to ensure that these are placed at the right ratios and therefore best energy efficiency is possible in the air cooled chillers.
